We’ve all been there. We have an outfit in mind and then we put it on and it’s wah wah…. lackluster. Doesn’t work. Case in point- BELOW.
My goal with this outfit was to use white as the base and let the neon belt add a fun, summery twist!
But let’s talk about why this outfit doesn’t work -
The top is too busy and doesn’t fall at the right spot - hiding the belt a bit. In this scenario, the belt should take the starring role. Instead, the two pieces compete against each other when they should flow together.
Sneakers are not the right footwear choice here. It creates a heaviness to the overall look.
The hair. Overdone and again competes for airspace against the shirt and belt.
The neon belt feels out of place because there are no other pops of color to make it feel like it should be part of the outfit.
So let’s strip it down and make it work, with the same goal in mind.
Step 1: Changed out the top. A high neckline tank, tucked in, gives balance to the wide-leg pants and allows the belt to drape down the leg, add a pop of color, and be the hero.
Step 2: Got rid of the sneakers. A neutral, barely-there shoe doesn’t distract from the mission of the outfit.
Step 3: Tied in some color through the use of accessories. I added a stack of Roxanne Assoulin bracelets that are bright and cheery and complement the brightness of the belt.
Step 4: I left the wild hair. With a streamlined tank it works.
These simple tweaks took the outfit from meh to cute! Here is a side by side -
Do you see the subtle difference?
